welcome to my messed up mind
"They are seventeen when they realize
There are ten years left, five
Maybe, if they are not lucky.
Or worse, all alone in a field
Of wildflowers and tombstones.
They send you fake flowers in the mail,
All yellow plastic and bubble wrap.
Imagine, for a moment:
A heart split into three parts,
A shopping cart with broken wheels.
It doesn’t have to happen,
We just have to think about it.
Like we think about old record albums,
Back before the singer shot himself,
And the bassist took two too many,
And the drummer learned the hard way
That we can’t breathe underwater.
Here are the waves, and here are the gulls
And here is the sand castle built
To keep the waves from washing in again.
“It’s no good,” you said, and threw the stone
Into the pond, hoping that the Lady
Of the Lake might catch it.
Forget about that part of it.
Just think about the music,
The way the windows were open
And the table pushed back to give us room
To dance and kiss in the morning light.
There is no betrayal here, and there is
Not always joy. We put our hearts outside
What we cannot comprehend, but the filter
Doesn’t work quite right, and we get them back
All bruised and sloppy, instead.
We think about a world
Where we got them back better.
You fell into step beside them but
You faded right away again.
Nine, the countdown started, the quarry growing.
The farmer leans on his shove and spits
They keep looking. They don’t find you.
You are no longer tangible, the how to touch it
Hanging over their head.
Then one. Here is the crow, and here is the gun
The lover saying, “Maybe not.”
They didn’t mean it. You didn’t hear it.
